When you visit South
Africa you immediately notice the difference between black and
(mainly) while settlements.
Usually whites hide
themselves behind walls and barricades,
often even protected by electrical fences. Into these areas you proceed
like into a prison, guarded by security.
Blacks however mostly live under poor and simple conditions.
Since the end of Apartheid differences are reduced, but many
blacks are not really unhappy with their
"living standard".
These are the homes of
the blacks:
And those are the homes
of the better blacks:
Blacks like painting
their houses.
In 1999 und 2000 I was twice in Volksrust, about 250 km
south-east of Johannesburg.
It is not really a nice town. Nearby there is a coal fired power
station - Majuba - named after the famous hill near Volksrust where the
Britains were conquered by the
boers in 1881 .
I lived at Stucky's
- a german who emigrated to South Africa in the 50s. Besides a guest
house he runs a pub which cannot be more german!
Everything is dedicated to beer, they play german music and of course
they serve many german dishes.
